SONG #48: Keane - Somewhere Only We Know
Inducted Sept 21, 2015
Keane is another one of the bands that my friend/Concordia roomate Jeremiah gave me a heads up on.
I was immediately taken in by the piano driven pop, and have followed the band ever since.
Here are some of the tracks that I love from Keane and are in my "Major League" playlist:
Everybody's Changing
Tear Up this Town
Higher than the Sun
Love too Much
Stupid Things
The Way I feel
You may see another one of these in the Hall of Fame Down the Road.
So Somewhere Only We Know was the first song I heard from Keane. Beautiful opening hook with the driving chords moving the song forward to the first verse.. Tom Chaplin's beautiful vocals open softly and gradually grow louder and more confident by the end of the song.
Here's wikipedia's breakdown of the music theory:
""Somewhere Only We Know" is a traditional piano rock song. The piano is the most relevant instrument due to its harmonic and rhythmic role. It is played in quavers throughout the whole song, holding the tempo and the rhythmic pattern. The studio version is recorded in 87bpm, and follows a 4/4 time signature, the most commonly used in traditional rock songs. It is in the key of A major. The song form can analyzed as ABAB CBCB, a variation of the strophic form. The verse (A) chord progression is a plain (I-II-V), one of the most used chord progressions in music; the chorus (B) presents a (VI-III-IV-V) progression; the variation of the verse section (C) presents a (II-III-IV-V) progression." - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Somewhere_Only_We_Know
Lyrically the song is gorgeous, specifically the refrain:
Oh simple thing, where have you gone?
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you're gonna let me in
I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin
I don't have a lot of specific memories of this song other than sitting in my dorm room listening to this song a lot. Again, Keane is a go to band of mine, and this song is one of the best. This is piano rock like none other.
